NGW’s Commandments of Personal FINANCE

Do not spend more than you make.

Get out of debt and stay out of debt as fast as possible.

Use debit cards or cash, do not keep any credit cards in your wallet.

Budget before each month starts.

Christmas, your mom’s birthday, and tax season are not emergencies, plan for the things that happen every year.

Always have health, life, auto, long-term disability, home or renter’s insurance.  (and long term care after age 65)

Do not have car payments, payments on toys, or monthly phone payments.  Ditch the student loans too.  There is no “good debt.”

Never lease a car.

Never finance anything, even if the interest rate is 0%.

The sum of your vehicles should not be more than half of your annual gross income.

Have a 15 year or less mortgage.

How much house can your buy?  Multiply your monthly take-home pay by 25% to get the maximum mortgage payment you can afford.

Use a ROTH 401K, ROTH 403B, and ROTH IRAs (pre-tax).

Always invest enough to get the full company match.

Never cash out a 401K, only rollover.

Once you are debt free not including the house, invest 15% of your gross household income into retirement.

Do not manage money without your spouse’s input.

Happy debt slaying.

Sarah
